The Twilight: New Moon: Book 2 : The Story That Broke Hearts and Changed Everything
After the wild, dangerous events of Twilight, Bella and Edward finally seem to have found their peace. Bella turns 18, but instead of celebrating, she feels uneasy. Edward will stay 17 forever, while she’s already growing older — one birthday closer to wrinkles and mortality. She hates the thought of being older than him, and deep inside, she still dreams of becoming a vampire one day, so they can be equals forever.
Edward, on the other hand, refuses. He loves Bella too much to condemn her to his eternal, cursed life. He wants her to stay human — warm, alive, safe.
To make her happy, the Cullens host a small birthday celebration at their house. It’s sweet and filled with love — until everything goes wrong. When Bella opens a gift, she accidentally gets a small paper cut, and the drop of blood sends Jasper, who still struggles to control his thirst, into a frenzy. He lunges at Bella, and though the others stop him, the chaos leaves her cut and bleeding.
That moment changes everything. Edward looks at Bella — hurt, fragile, bleeding — and realizes how close she came to dying. For him, it’s too much. He decides that the only way to truly protect her… is to leave her.
The Breakup That Shattered Her World
One cold evening, Edward takes Bella deep into the forest and tells her the words that destroy her:
“This is the last time you’ll ever see me. It will be as if I never existed.”
Then he’s gone.
Bella runs after him, lost and broken, and collapses in the woods. Hours later, she’s found by Sam Uley, a mysterious local who leads a group of young men from La Push. Charlie is terrified when he sees Bella come home lifeless — not physically, but emotionally.
Bella stops smiling, stops caring. Her friends can’t reach her. Her father worries helplessly. The only time she feels something again is when she puts herself in danger — when she hears Edward’s voice warning her in her head. It’s not real; it’s her memory of him. But to her, it feels like a ghost whispering through her fear.
So, she starts chasing danger — riding motorcycles, wandering alone at night — just to hear his voice again.
The Return of Jacob Black
One day, she decides to fix two broken motorcycles and visits Jacob Black at La Push — the boy with warm eyes, long hair, and the soft smile who once told her vampire legends. Jacob becomes her light. He doesn’t judge her; he makes her laugh again. Slowly, Bella starts to heal — not because she’s forgotten Edward, but because Jacob’s friendship brings warmth back into her frozen world.
But something strange starts happening around La Push. People disappear. Wolves are seen in the woods. Jacob himself starts to change — becoming distant, angry, confused. Then suddenly, he’s gone too.
When Bella finally confronts him, she finds out the shocking truth — Jacob is a werewolf.
The stories he once told her weren’t just legends. The Quileute tribe’s young men are born into a line of protectors — shapeshifters who turn into wolves whenever vampires come near. The transformation is painful and violent, but Jacob now belongs to Sam’s wolf pack, and they protect their people from the kind of danger the Cullens represent.
At first, Bella is frightened. But when she sees that Jacob still cares deeply for her, she accepts him — wolf or not. Their bond deepens, even as she keeps part of her heart locked away for Edward.
Danger Returns — The Vampire Hunt
Then comes another twist — Victoria, the vengeful vampire whose mate James was killed in Twilight, returns to Forks. She’s hunting Bella. She wants revenge — an eye for an eye. And now that Edward is gone, Bella is unprotected.
The wolves start patrolling the area to keep her safe, and Jacob becomes her guardian. There’s an unspoken love between them, though Bella can’t give him what he truly wants — her heart still belongs to Edward.
Meanwhile, Bella continues to take reckless risks, still chasing Edward’s ghostly voice. One day, she jumps off a cliff — a dangerous act that nearly kills her. Jacob saves her from drowning, but Alice Cullen, who can see the future, sees Bella jump and believes she’s dead.
When Edward hears the false news, he loses all will to live.
The Volturi — A World of Ancient Power
Edward travels to Volterra, Italy, to ask the Volturi — the powerful vampire coven who enforce vampire law — to end his life. When Alice realizes what’s happening, she rushes back to Forks, finds Bella alive, and together they race to Italy to stop Edward before it’s too late.
The scene in Volterra is one of the most dramatic moments in the saga. Bella reaches him just in time — running through the sunlight-filled streets, throwing herself into his arms before he exposes himself as a vampire to the humans. It’s a moment of pure desperation and relief.
But their reunion doesn’t go unnoticed. The Volturi — Aro, Caius, and Marcus — summon them. Aro, fascinated by Edward’s mind-reading and Bella’s immunity to his powers, lets them go… but only after Edward promises to turn Bella into a vampire someday.
Coming Home — and Choosing Love Again
They return to Forks, where everything feels changed. Jacob is hurt — he saved Bella, loved her, and now she’s back with Edward. The two boys now stand on opposite sides of an ancient war: vampire versus werewolf. Yet both love Bella enough to protect her at any cost.
Edward finally confesses how much leaving her destroyed him. He thought she’d move on, but instead, they both nearly died from heartbreak.
“You believed I didn’t want you,” he says, “when all I wanted was to keep you safe.”
Bella forgives him instantly. She loves him too much to do anything else.
The book closes on an uneasy peace — Edward back by Bella’s side, Jacob keeping his distance, and Bella once again asking to be turned into a vampire. Edward agrees… but on one condition: she has to marry him first.
My Thoughts
It’s slower, sadder, and deeply emotional — but it sets the stage for everything that follows. When Bella jumps from that cliff and the waves swallow her, it’s not just danger — it’s a symbol of how far she’ll go for love, even if it kills her.
